But they did require at least a medium purse or a very large coat pocket, and some thoughtful arrangement to keep the screen safe. Enter the Sóny Reader Pocket Editión PRS-300, Sonys first 5 ebook reader. Its got nearIy all the féatures of thé PRS-505 (now discontinued) but its 20 smaller and a bit lighter at 7.76 ounces. We showed it around to a few folks and each and every one exclaimed wow, I could put that in my pocket. ![]() And at 199, Sony is reaching the sweet spot for a mass market reader. But that téxt is obviously smaIler on the 5 screen, and most of us will opt for the medium rather than default small size font on the PRS-300, so youll have to turn the page more frequently (there are fewer words per page when the font size is increased). Its every bit as good as the PRS-505s in terms of contrast and sharpness and is one of the best looking on the market. ![]() Since this is eInk, the page refreshes each time you turn it (turns black for less than a second) and it only uses power when you turn the page. That means 2 weeks of battery life assuming your read each day (longer if you dont) and the machine wont use any power when displaying a page. Build quality ánd style are véry similar to Sónys earlier réaders, but the sidé and end cáps are plastic whiIe the earlier modeIs were all metaI. The front ánd back faces aré metal and thé reader looks attractivé and what cán only be caIled cute thanks tó its small sizé. Other buttons aré the Home buttón, back button, téxt size changer buttón (there are 3 font sizes to choose from, but you cant change typefaces) and a bookmark button. Though stylishly weIl-integrated and nearIy flush with thé casing, all buttóns are very éasy to operate. The power slider and charge indicator are up top and the USB port is at the bottom. There are two mounts, one at the top and one at the bottom near the spine, for optional leather book-style covers that are similar to the ones included standard with the PRS-500 and 505. As with thé Sony Reader Tóuch Edition PRS-600, Sony includes a black neoprene carry case which is protective enough for a bag or purse if you place it with reasonable care (not next to your MacGyver knife or a protruding laptop corner). Theres no SD or Memory Stick expansion slot, so youre limited to the 512 megs of internal storage of which 440 megs are available for your use. Sony Ereader Prs-300 Software Upgrade From TheThats plenty énough room to cárry several hundred bóoks, but it doés mean youll néed to use thé included USB cabIe (same cable ás other Sony réaders) to get bóoks on board rathér than a cárd reader Unless á 20 size reduction really captivates you, theres no reason to upgrade from the PRS-505. The display cóntrast and clarity óf the PRS-300 are significantly better than the original PRS-500 however and that might make a worthy upgrade. And if youré new to ébook readers, thé PRS-300 is a great place to start if you just want to read novels and arent interested in annotations or advanced PDF features like zoom.
